Like petrol, the price of charging varies from charge station to charge station. Unlike petrol, prices can vary depending on a number of factors.
Charging prices
Charge station owners set the price of charging at their stations. These can be found on the 'Location details' screen in the Chargefox app.
Depending on the station, prices can range from $0 up to $40 for a full charge. Typically, the faster the charger, the higher the price.
Pricing factors
Typically, you will be charged a 'cents per kWh' rate. This will be displayed clearly in the Chargefox app for the station you are charging at. Charge station owners have a number of options when it comes to setting the price of charging at their stations. Pricing can be set based on:
- the time of day a session starts
- the day of the week
- the duration of the a session, e.g. a 60-minute session may have one price for the first 40 minutes, and another price for the remaining 20
A combination of all three factors is also possible, but we encourage station owners to keep pricing simple so that it is clear to drivers and easy to estimate the total cost of a charge.
Idle fees
Some stations include idle fees: this is a per-minute fee for being plugged in to a station but not charging (sometimes called 'overstaying'). Typically, you have a 10 minute grace-period after your vehicle has stopped charging before idle fees are incurred.
When you stop your charge session, you will see a summary of your session costs in the Chargefox app. We'll also send a tax invoice to your registered email address.
